Briefly introduce yourself, age and where are you based?
Moses Kemibaro is an internet entrepreneur. I am a co-founder of Dotsavvy , a leading digital agency in Kenya which I have run for the past 7 years, starting from my home and now with a team of 14. I am in my mid thirties and I am mostly based in the city of Nairobi.
Tell us about your blog and what inspired it?
I started my blog MosesKemibaro.com initially to write about anything I found interesting as well as my passions and hobbies. Over time, I now write almost exclusively about technology in Kenya and the broader East African region. I am very interested in technology and find very engaging to write about within a Kenyan and East African context.
Before blogging what were you doing?
I do not blog full-time but tend to do several posts a week. On a full-time basis I run my business, Dotsavvy.
How many hours per day do you spend on your blog outside your work?
I probably put in around 2 to 4 hours a week on my blog.
Your blog is only monetized with Google Adsense, why?
I got started with Adsense as it was the easiest way to get some income going. I am planning to add more sources of revenue in the coming year including affiliate marketing, e-books and other ad networks.
What is your content generation strategy and do you keep to it?
My strategy for content generation is to cover topics that would interest my audience which is largely people interested in technology from the East African region. I look for topics that are varied and interesting within this thematic approach.
Since blogging, what is the biggest mistake you’ve ever made and what did you learn from it?
The biggest mistake is probably not having focus when I first started. I would blog about anything and everything that took my fancy. There was no consistency. Once I figured out that focused content is what gets the most attention and audiences, I have increased traffic every month.
How do you generate traffic for your blog?
I have not really marketed my blog that much. However, I do use Twitter and Facebook to get lots of traffic from my social networks. I also have a link to my blog on my company web site and make sure it’s always in articles I submit to some publications. The other thing is that since my content is so niche, I get great indexing in Google where I am highly ranked for technology posts for East Africa,
Is your blog authored by yourself only or multiple bloggers and why?
I run my blog solo.
Given an opportunity to sell your blog now, what would you charge for it?
I don’t think I could ever sell my blog. I consider it to be a part of my personal branding so I would never sell it.
What is your opinion on domain name and blog flipping, do you participate in that space?
On domain names, it’s an area that’s been badly abused. As for flipping a blog, why not if it has the right commercial value?
Within the next 12 months, what are your goals for the blog?
In the next 12 months, I want to put it much more time on a weekly basis. I also want to sign-up advertisers and expand content to include a broader range of topics with the technology space like product reviews and interviews.
What have been the highlight(s) in your blogging career?
There are so many! I am finding that my blog is opening lots of professional and social doors. People like what I am doing with my blog and I am being approached by media and businesses to work with them. It’s amazing!
Tell us about your workstation, is it within your bedroom/dedicated home-office/office park?
I work using a laptop at home and at work. I really do blog from anywhere, even when sitting in a restaurant for coffee. What’s important is that I have uninterrupted time and space to do the best blogging.
What gadget or software makes your blogging a pleasure?
I use WordPress. It’s the best blogging software if you ask me. It has lots of themes, widgets and plug-in.
Blogging is a lonely profession, how do you keep yourself motivated?
Sometimes, it’s hard to get blogging. You can be unmotivated for long periods of time. One of the things that keep me going is the motivation to break stories before mainstream media does. Another thing is writing a post that is in-depth and authoritative that then boosts my professional credibility in the marketplace.
